  61.     volumes mounted on your Macintosh desktop or disable
  62.     all VirusScan functions from the Admin Information
  63.     dialog box.

  65. 10. You may password-protect all information and settings
  66.     you enter into the Admin Information dialog box in
  67.     order to prevent unauthorized changes.

  69. 11. Network administrators with corporate VirusScan
  70.     licenses can use McAfee's Customizer application to
  71.     pre-configure VirusScan for distribution.

  74. KNOWN ISSUES
  75.   
  76.  
  77. 1.  When encountering a file infected with a Concept virus,
  78.                 it sometimes takes multiple cleanings to remove it.
  79.  
  80. 2.        VirusScan falsely identifies the Berkeley Systems 
  81.     AfterDark module "Nirvana" as the Nirvana virus. If 
  82.     you use this AfterDark module, you should add it to the
  83.     exclusion list. 
  84.  
  85. 3.  VirusScan does not automatically create a log file 
  86.     if you simply specify a log file other than the 
  87.     default in the Action tab. To create a new log file 
  88.     for VirusScan to use, start a text editor (such as 
  89.     SimpleText or TeachText), then name and save an empty 
  90.     file. Next, select the Extra Log File checkbox in the
  91.     Action tab, then choose your new log file in the 
  92.     directory dialog box that appears.
  93.  
  94. 4.  When scanning compressed files, you must select the 
  95.     Scan in Compressed Files option. If you scanned a 
  96.     compressed file without this option selected, you 
  97.     will need to trash the VirusScan Fingerprints File, 
  98.     restart your computer, and rescan the file with the 
  99.     Scan in Compressed Files option selected. In a 
  100.     standard installation, the path for the VirusScan 
  101.     Fingerprints file is System Folder:Preferences:VirusScan.
  102.  
  103. 5.  Uninstalling VirusScan from your computer deletes all
  104.     VirusScan files, but leaves an empty VirusScan folder
  105.     in the Preferences folder in your System folder. To
  106.     delete this folder, drag it to the Trash. If you use
  107.     a custom installer created with the Customizer 
  108.     application, you must also delete the scan tasks stored
  109.     in the Scan Tasks folder.
  110.  
  111. 6.  To cut, copy or paste text in the Task Description 
  112.     dialog box, use standard Macintosh keyboard shortcuts.
  113.     Editing commands are unavailable when you have the
  114.     Task Description dialog box open.
  115.  
  116. 7.  Opening an alias to a file with a call from an
  117.     AppleScript applet will crash VirusScan. As a 
  118.     workaround, be sure to call the actual file, not an 
  119.     alias, from AppleScript applets.

  166. USING PRESCAN                                        
  167.  
  168. Use Prescan to ensure that your system is virus-free before
  169. you install VirusScan. To launch Prescan, double-click the 
  170. Prescan icon located on the VirusScan CD-ROM, on the Prescan
  171. floppy disk or, if you downloaded the VirusScan files, in 
  172. the folder where you saved the files you decompressed.
  173.  
  174. Next, click Scan to scan your hard disk for viruses; click
  175. Clean to remove virus infections from your hard disk. For
  176. maximum security, you should scan all drives on your 
  177. computer before you install VirusScan.
  178.  
  179. If you do not run Prescan before you began your installation, 
  180. the VirusScan installer asks you if you want to clean your 
  181. computer before you install VirusScan. Click Yes to perform
  182. this scan operation.
  183.  
  184. Note: This first scan operation will take some time, as will the
  185. first scan you perform with VirusScan. Subsequent scans will
  186. proceed much more quickly. The amount of time the scan
  187. operation takes will depend on how large your hard disk is
  188. and how fast your computer operates.

  216. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  219. Q:        Can VirusScan scan all my volumes at once?
  220.  
  221. A:        Yes, you can select all volumes on your desktop, and 
  222.                 drag and drop them onto the application icon.
  223.  
  224.  
  225. Q:  Does VirusScan for Macintosh detect macro viruses such 
  226.     as the Concept virus?
  227.  
  228. A:  Yes. VirusScan for Macintosh finds all current 
  229.     Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel macro viruses.

  232. Q:  Can macro viruses written on a PC infect a Macintosh?
  233.  
  234. A:  Yes, some can. Any computer, including a Macintosh,
  235.     that can run Microsoft Word 6.x or later is 
  236.     susceptible to macro virus infections.

  239. Q:  When I use Config Wizard to modify my customized 
  240.     settings, does VirusScan save my previous scan tasks?
  241.  
  242. A:  No. When you use Config Wizard to modify your settings,
  243.     VirusScan automatically clears old tasks.
  244.

  246. Q:  Can a virus on a floppy disk still infect my computer
  247.     if I have a task configured to scan floppies?
  248.  
  249. A:  Possibly. If you double-click a program or a file on 
  250.     a floppy disk before VirusScan has finished scanning 
  251.     that disk, you risk starting an infected application,
  252.     which might infect your computer. For maximum 
  253.     protection, configure a task to scan files as they 
  254.     launch; this supplements the task that scans floppy 
  255.     disks. These two measures should eliminate the risk 
  256.     of infection before VirusScan completes its floppy 
  257.     disk scan.
  258.      
  259.  
  260. Q:  Will VirusScan scan encrypted or password-protected
  261.     compressed files?
  262.  
  263. A:  No. In order to scan encrypted or password-protected
  264.     files, VirusScan would have to breach their security.
  265.     VirusScan maintains the integrity of that security by
  266.     not attempting to scan encrypted or password-protected
  267.     files. It will, however, tell you that it did not scan
  268.     them. You can scan encrypted files as you decrypt them
  269.     by creating a scan task that uses file modification as its
  270.     scan trigger. See "Scheduling Scan Tasks" in Chapter
  271.     4 of the VirusScan User's Guide for more information.

  274. Q:  Can I update the VirusScan for Macintosh virus
  275.     definitions to detect new viruses?
  276.  
  277. A:  Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
  278.     VirusScan for Macintosh update files from the
  279.     McAfee Web Site, the McAfee BBS, or from other online 
  280.     service providers.
  281.  
  282.     To download from the McAfee Web Site, follow these
  283.     steps:
  284.  
  285.     1. Go to the McAfee Web Site (http:\\www.mcafee.com).
  286.  
  287.     2. Click the Update DAT File button.
  288.  
  289.     3. Scroll down, then select the update for the
  290.        Macintosh. Save the file to your Desktop.
  291.  
  292.     To update your virus definitions, double-click the
  293.     new update icon. The update will replace the virus
  294.     definitions installed on your hard disk with new
  295.     updates so that VirusScan will detect new known
  296.     viruses.
  297.  
  298.     Once you download it, you may distribute the update
  299.     icon on disk, as an e-mail attachment, or across a
  300.     network. If you need additional assistance with
